Why John Fedro Isn’t Flashy

As I sit in my backyard couch writing this article I smile as I am reminded of all that I am thankful for and knowing the difference between true happiness and propaganda happiness.  This article is made for the person working hard towards their dreams; make sure the dreams you are chasing are 100% yours.

This past Monday I hosted an amazing Real Estate Investing Meetup here in Austin, Tx (from meetup.com).  After the meetup was over I sat and had drinks with about a  third of the group that attended.  We talked, shared stories, and traded advice back and forth for nearly 3 hours. Towards the end of the evening I was caught off guard by a unique question, “John Fedro why don’t you seem to be as flashy as other “Coaches or Mentors” within real estate investing.”

So I began to think… Why wasn’t I living in a downtown penthouse instead of a modest house in the suburbs?  Why wasn’t I shopping exclusively at the expensive mall in town instead of Target? Why wasn’t I leasing a brand new Hummer every year instead of driving my original 2005 Cadillac CTS?

I am reminded of the classic quote from Jim Rohn, “After you become a millionaire, you can give all of your money away because what’s important is not the million dollars; what’s important is the person you have become in the process of becoming a millionaire.”

The answer comes down to you being TRULY happy with yourself and NOT living someone else’s dream but your own.

I’m going to tell you a story and then I will ask you a series of questions to determine some of your true happiness goals. I wish someone had done this to me when I was at your stage in the game. You can reflect on these answers when you have made your first million.

My Story: While growing up I lived a lower-middle class lifestyle.  We had everything we needed to get by but at the cost I hardly saw my mother or father daily.  Except for Saturday mornings when my mother and I would go roller skating religiously.  The time I spent with my rat-race chasing parents were too few and far between.  I still harbor much resentment towards the traditional J.O.B.s that seemed to keep my parents prisoners while I was waiting patiently at a sitters somewhere.

As I grew to a teenager I began to see traditional employment as a way to enslave me for the next 60 years. Ever felt that way?  It literally frightened me to the point of panic attacks by the age of 13.  Work when THEY say to WORK.  Buy what THEY say to BUY. I vowed to have the freedom and lifestyle to be available to be with my kids while they were growing up and before and after they went to school.

In my 20′s I realized I still harbored a resentment toward corporate America and began to think of alternative methods to make money with my present skills.  But I was 20, what skills did I have? Welcome to the Wild World of Mobile Home Investing!

This hatred for  traditional employment carried with me throughout my entire childhood and to this very day.  “I will not waste my life making someone else rich!” I was 20 years old and it wouldn’t be until another 4 months until I closed my first deal making over $30,000.  My eyes were wide open now!… Now what do I buy?

Almost everyone knows that your 9-5 job is called the Rat-Race; scurrying to and from work everyday like mice I suppose.  If you are eagerly working hard (in your side business) so one day soon you can leave your full-time job then you are in the majority and I congratulate you.

Let’s fast forward your future by 15 months… (Let me paint you a picture)

You are now making $6,500 passive cash-flow per month with your portfolio of cash-flowing properties.  You have just handed in your 2 week notice at work and you are about to be a FREE man! (Or Free Lady!)  Now you have enough money and free time to travel, take your significant other out of work, send your kids to a private school, pay your bills, take vacations, and reinvest time/money back into your real estate business.

Envisioning the Lifestyle above answer the following questions about yourself:

1. The people most important to me are ________________.
2. I will love to take _____________ vacations a year with ______________.
3. The vehicle I drive must be ____________________.
4. I want to be FREE from my full-time Job by ______________________.
5. Once I am free I will continue to lower my debt, build my business, follow my dreams, love my family and ________________.

BE AWARE!!!  There is a Second “Secret” Rat-Race just ahead in the distance. You have finally freed yourself from your 9-5 job. You are now saving more money than ever. You are growing your business with each new deal you complete.  Now here comes the 2nd Rat-Race you never saw coming. Except this 2nd Rat-Race is INSIDE you, questioning your PRIDE and SELF-WORTH.

The media’s mission is to sell you thoughts you don’t need!  Propaganda for a “better” lifestyle is what is being rammed into your brain most seconds of every day… and you begin to question what is REALLY important for your well being.

You see this propaganda everywhere: every new model car commercial, jewelry store ads, product placement in television shows, your neighbors upgrading their new 3D television, rap videos are overloaded with these images of class, all hinting at what to buy with your hard earned money. Advertisers know how to separate you from your money down a science if you let them.

The 2nd rat-race is internal.  You know it has invaded you when you start to second guess your current happiness and free lifestyle.

Always remember to be truthful to who you are. Only buy expensive toys and lavish gifts if you truly will find long lasting joy in this item.  The newest flashiest cars, toys, games, and jewels always come and go. Don’t let an ill placed purchase hurt you financially.
